Shortcut loopdraft
Also known as: Unlockable shortcut, Folded space
Definition
A one-way door, ladder, or elevator that connects a late part of a level back to an early part, usually opened from the far side. The space stays the same size but folds in on itself, collapsing travel time.
How to spot it
Look for doors barred from your side, or ledges that face a place you have already been. When you open one, check how much of the level you just deleted from your future routes.
Why it works
The unlock rewards spatial understanding rather than combat skill, so it pays off attention. Because the player earns the compression themselves, it reframes earlier tedium as setup. It also produces the strongest possible legibility signal: the moment two remembered areas snap together, the player finally holds the level as one shape.
Origin
Dark Souls (2011)
Practiced earlier in Metroidvania design; Dark Souls is the most systematic modern articulation, where shortcuts substitute for a fast travel system.

The church elevator ties the far end of the area back to the starting hub, retroactively reframing the entire climb as a single loop rather than a corridor.
