Level Atlas

Scarcity pressuredraft

Also known as: Resource starvation, Forced adaptation, Ammo economy pressure

Definition

Restricting a resource the player has come to rely on, while making an alternative abundant, so the player changes tactics on their own. The level does not remove the old tool, it just prices it out.

How to spot it

Track what the level gives you against what it asks of you. If ammunition drops off while environmental hazards and throwable objects multiply, the swap is authored. The tell is that the alternative is oversupplied: a designer who wants you to use the sawblade puts eight sawblades in the room.

Why it works

Being told to use a different weapon is a chore. Running out and improvising is a story the player tells afterward, and the discovery gets credited to them rather than the designer. It also re-teaches a tool the player thought they had finished learning, which is far cheaper than shipping a new one. Scarcity raises baseline tension for free, since every shot becomes a decision. The risk is that starvation reads as stinginess if the alternative is not obvious enough, and players who miss the intended swap experience the section as unfairly hard rather than cleverly constrained.

Conventional ammunition is deliberately starved while sawblades, propane tanks, and radiators are everywhere, making the gravity gun the path of least resistance.
