Hideo Kojimadraft
Director of Metal Gear, Metal Gear Solid, and Death Stranding. Kojima invented stealth as a genre out of a sprite limit, made the console itself part of the story, and built a game whose multiplayer is other people's leftover bridges.

“We had no choice but to make a game that could be done without enemies. And that's what allowed me to develop Metal Gear.”
Why it matters
Kojima is here for three inventions that each spawned a lineage, and for the habit behind them: treating whatever is in the way, the hardware, the controller, the other players, as material. That habit is teachable even when the results are strange, and it is why designers who share none of his taste still cite him.
Lessons
01 · process
Turn the hardware limit into the genre
The MSX2 could not draw enough sprites for a war game without flicker, so Kojima made a game about not being seen: fewer enemies on screen, and avoiding them is the point. Stealth as a genre is a workaround that became a philosophy. His 2009 keynote generalizes it as the wall of impossibility: the constraint you cannot climb is where the new idea is.
02 · narrative
The controller and the screen are part of the fiction
Psycho Mantis reads the memory card, rumbles the pad, and can only be beaten by moving the controller to the other port. Kojima has said the port switch came from the idea of a master telling a student to clear their mind. The fourth wall is treated as a design surface rather than a joke, and the lesson, that the player's real-world situation is material, runs through every later Kojima game.
03 · systems
Make connection the mechanic
Death Stranding's strand concept turns other players into infrastructure: bridges, ladders, and roads left by strangers appear in your world, and likes are the only currency. Kojima describes it as a step past action games built on sticks, toward games built on ropes. It is the asynchronous idea Miyazaki pioneered, pushed until the whole game is made of it.
